Coeur d'Alene senior Quarterback, Chad Chalich ran for three touchdowns and passed for one more as the Coeur d'Alene Vikings(2-0) beat the Moses Lake Chiefs(1-0) 32-14 saturday night at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. Chalich finished the night with 207 yards passing and 72 rushing. Moses Lake Quarterback, Justin Simmons looked great at times going 19/37 for 175 yards and a touchdown, but it was his four turnovers that tell the story.
The Vikings would get the opening kickoff, but before they could get going they would committ their first of 12 penalties on the evening. Once they got moving, the Vikings would march right down the field and into the endzone ending with a 6 yard run by Chalich for a 7-0 lead. Following the touchdown, the two teams would trade interceptions before Moses Lake would makes its march. The Chiefs would need only four plays to go 65 yards for the score, capped off with a 12 yard pass from Simmons to senior Anthony Johnson. Johnson would finish the night with 6 catches for 82 yards. With a 2 Point Conversion the Chiefs would take a 8-7 lead with just over two minutes left in the first quarter.
The two teams would then take turns having sloppy possessions end with punts, before the Vikings would go 41 yards in just five plays and a second Chad Chalich rushing touchdown. Following a two point conversion, Couer d'Alene would have a 15-8 lead.
An untimely fumble would get the Vikings the ball back at the Chiefs 38. After a personal foul and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, Chalich would find Joe Roletto wide open for a 46 yard gain putting at the 8 yardline with just seconds left on the clock. Junior Kicker, Parker Wilson would split the uprights with no time remaining to give the Vikings an 18-8 halftime lead.
The second half was much of the same for Moses Lake as they would take the kickoff and promptly go three and out. The punt would not make it back to the line of scrimmage as its was tipped by a hard Viking rush. Five plays later Chalich was into the endzone, from 7 yards, for his third rushing touchdown of the game to widen the gap to 25-8.
With 4:16 left in the game, Chalich would get his only touchdown pass of the night. After a fumbled snap, the Vikings would take over at the Chief three yardline. Following a run that resulted in a loss of four yards, senior Deon Watson hauled in a seven yard pass for the score to make it 32-8.
Justin Simmons would take it in from one yard out with 29 seconds left to bring the score to its final stop at 32-12.

W.F. West dominates North Mason from the start...
The Bearcats of W.F. West(Chehalis) scored early and often in their 44-0 drubbing of North Mason(Belfair) on Saturday afternoon at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. The Bearcats(1-0) defense was suffocating as they only allowed the Bulldogs(0-1) to gain just 77 yards of total offense.
North Mason would get the ball to begin the game but could only manage one yard before having to punt. W.F. West would get the ball at their own 37 and march 63 yards on seven plays before Joseph Rothlin managed to get behind the Bulldog defense for 35 yards on the rececption and the touchdown. Less than four minutes later the Bearcats would strike again, this time Colton Watson would get in on a 25 yard yard reception from Quarterback Mitch Gueller. During the game, Gueller would do a little bit over everthing for W.F. he would Run, Pass, Tackle and Kick. Gueller would open the second half by returning the kick for a touchdown.
Gueller would finish the day 8/15 passing for 99 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also carried the ball 5 times for 72 yards.
North Mason's best opportunity came in the second period when Quarterback Tommy Renne took the ball 52 yards to the Bearcats 18.

Oroville grinds out win over Darrington...
The second game of the 2010 Emerald City Kickoff Classic was a battle between two schools with a combined enrollment of 264. It was a battle between two teams that were very content with running the football, Oroville would only throw five passes the entire game.
It was obvious both teams were playing their first games of the season, as each offense could only reel off one touchdown. On the final play of the first quarter, Runningback Nicky Perez would get the ball and take it 52 yards for the touchdown.

Highlanders top Borderites 35-32 in ECKC Opener...
A huge day by Blaine Running Back, Mario Gobatto was not enough to get his Blaine Borderites(0-1) past the Hazen Highlanders(1-0) in the opening game of the Emerald City Kickoff Classic. Gobatto finished the day with 224 yards rushing on 23 carries and 4 touch downs on runs of 34, 1, 49 and 14.
Hazen jumped out to an early lead when on the third play from scrimmage Running Back, Cody Taylor shot through the defense 65 yards for the touchdown. Taylor would finish the day with 123 yards rushing on 13 carries, but his best play was a 94 yard pass from Quarterback Tony Nipert on the Highlanders first drive of the second half.
The game went back and forth to begin the 3rd quarter with both teams scorings on big plays. Hazen would take control of the game late in the third quarter when a squib kick, following a touchdown, was fumbled and recovered by the Highlanders. No high school football for me tonight...
As much as I love Seahawks football, I hate preseason. My season tickets cost me $72 per game, they play a 10 game home season and I have three tickets. The first two games of those ten are preseason games that I pay full price to attend. Tonight instead of going to watch say Redmond @ Juanita, Liberty @ Skyline, or the one I really want to see Union @ Bothell, I get to pay $72 to see Charlie Whitehurst and the other Seattle Seahawks best backups take on the hated Oakland Raiders backups.
I have had people tell me to sell my Seahawks tickets, thats an option... In the regular season! One guy said "Just don't go", I couldn't possibly justify throwing $216 down the toilet.
Now don't get me wrong, I love the Seahawks and absolutely despise the Raiders, but nobody wants to watch backups play for $72 a ticket. I might get to see the Seahawks first team offense play a series or two... Maybe I would rather see backups?... No I wouldn't. I understand that teams need preseason game, but do they really need to full price for a game that has no meaning to the fans?
I am sorry for rambling about the NFL on a high school blog, but I am on my way to the game on a bus from Everett and have nothing better to do.

I am not sure who keeps reading my blog from Canada and Germany, but thanks! I like to check the stats for the blog and find it funny everytime the Canada and Germany labels gain a point.

Kentlake runs away from Auburn Riverside...
On a beautiful night at French Field in Kent, the Auburn Riverside Ravens traveled to take on the Kentlake Falcons in the opening night of SPSL North action. The Falcons are looking to build on a 7-3 record from 2010 that ended with a disappointing 56-6 loss at the hands of the Newport Knights in the preliminary round of the WIAA State Playoffs. The Ravens on the other hand were needing for a good start to a season with hopes of getting to the playoffs after finishing last season on the outside looking in with a 5-5 record.
Riverside decided to start the season with a bit of a trick as kicker Joe Miles would try an onside kick. Although unsuccessful, it showed that Riverside(0-1) was holding nothing back, unfortunately it also gave Kentlake(1-0) great field position. Kentlake grinded out nine plays that would end with senior WR Austin Pernell taking an option pitch around the right side for 12 yards and a 7-0 lead.
After a Riverside fumble, on just their second offensive play, the Falcons would go 30 yards before having a field goal attempt blocked by Ravens senior defensive back Kayonte Scott. Unfortunately for the Ravens they were unable to capitalize on the change in momentum and were forced to punt after just three plays. This time though it was Kentlake who would turn the ball over as they would fumble on their first play.
The Ravens had their best non-scoring drive of the night haulted in the redzone when Austin Pernell would come up with his first of two interceptions on the evening, returning the ball to his own 34. One play later it was senior WR Breton Medina recieving the pitch on the option and bursting through the Riverside defense for 66 yards and the touchdown.
With 8:48 left in the 2nd quarter, Auburn Riverside QB Josh Latta hit Kameron Broadway on a broken play for 44 yards to cut the Kentlake lead to just seven. That is as close as the Ravens could get though as they would turn the ball over six times on the night.
Kentlake would score three more times in the final 5 minutes of the first half, twice off Riverside turnovers. Caleb Saulo barreled into the endzone from 5 yards out and tossed touchdown passes of 13 yards to Austin Pernell and 49 yards to Trevor Baldwin. Saulo would also be injured on the final play of the first half when he was sacked after moving out of the pocket. He would not return at QB for the Falcons.
The third quarter went scoreless as Kentlake was content with running the football and eating up the clock. Riverside would do much of the same as QB Latta would run the ball on eight of the Ravens fifteen plays. At the end of the third quarter, Ravens sophomore RB Joey Galeno would leave the game with what appeard to be a serious injury to his right leg, he would not return.
The Falcons would run three offensive plays in the fourth quarter, scoring twice. First, sophomore RB Riley Higgins would jet through the defense almost untouched for 65 yards. Seniore RB Jordan Seffens would finish the scoring with a 57 yard run of his own.
Final Score, Kentlake 49 - Auburn Riverside 7.

- In glancing through the program I noticed that Kentlake only plays away from French Field one time this season, Sept. 23rd @ Jefferson. They will be the "Visiting" team three times this season at Frech Field, Sept. 9th @ Kentridge, Oct. 7th @ Kentwood and Oct. 27th @ Kent-Meridian. I can't imagine any team in the state can do better than that.

Coeur d'Alene vs Moses Lake, ECK Preview...
The 5:30 game of this years Emerald City Kickoff will feature the Coeur d'Alene Vikings from Idaho traveling west to take on the Moses Lake Chiefs. The Vikings are the defending 5A Champions and are already 1-0 on the season after a 37-24 win over the Rocky Mountain Grizzlies of Meridian, ID. It is opening night for Moses Lake as they look to improve on a 3-8 record in 2010. The two teams met last season in Coeur d'Alene with the Vikings winning 31-0. I sent emails to both head coaches and got responses, first I will preview Coeur d'Alene with head coach Shawn Amos...
WHSF: If I was a fan attending the games this weekend in Seattle, who are 3 players from the Vikings that I would want to watch for and what can you tell us about them?
SA: QB Chad Chalich – returning 5A Idaho State Player of the Year (28 / 34 357yards 3 TD’s last week), WR/DE Deon Watson – All State (6 catches 111 yards last week), LB Jake Cheesman – 140 Tackles last year (14 tackles and 1 sack last week).

At the end of the night I could see this being the best game at this years Emerald City Kickoff. I would like to thank both coaches for taking a few minutes to respond and I wish them both the best of luck on saturday and the rest of the season.
