Seattle Prep beats Mercer Island in overtime thriller...

They saved the best for last at the 2011 Emerald City Kickoff Classic. The Seattle Prep Panthers(1-0) could not have started much better than they did against the Mercer Island Islanders(0-1). The finish, although thrilling as a fan, is not what the Panthers would've liked.

The Panthers intercepted UW bound, Mercer Island quarterback, Jeff Lindquist twice and caused him to fumble on a run in the first three possessions of the game.

Prep would capitalize on the first interception by going 51 yards in 6 plays for the touchdown and a 7-0 lead. Following the second interception, Prep would go 72 yards in three plays, finishing with a 66 yard pass to Parker Mays, to take the lead to 14.

On the third play following the kickoff, Prep would recover a Lindquist fumble at its own 30. Prep would punt, Mercer Island would turn the ball over on down. Just two plays after the failed 4th down conversion, Prep Running Back, Tere Calloway would burst through the Islander defense for 70 yards to widen the gap to 21-0.

Mercer Island would take the kickoff 97 yards for the touchdown only to have it called back because of a blocking in the back penalty. It wouldn't matter though as the Islanders would march 93 yards on 11 plays, capped with a 13 yard run by Lindquist.

After the score, the Islander defense would force another three and out. This time the snap would go over the Prep punter and into the endzone for a safety cutting the lead to 21-9. The score would remain that way until halftime.

The third quarter looked as though it was going to be the beginning of the end for the Islanders. Prep would run 17 plays in the quarter, 14 runs, two passes and a punt that was fumbled by the Islander return man, compared to three plays from Mercer Island.

With just over nine minutes left in the 4th, Mays hauled in his second touchdown pass, this time from 7 yards out. The Panthers would convert a 2 point conversion pass to extend the lead to 29-9. The Panthers would not score again in regulation.

The Islanders would need three minutes to back into the endzone, this time Lindquist barrel in from one yard out to cut the Panther lead to 29-16. After another punt, the Islanders would get the ball back on the Prep 49 yardline. Following a 24 yard pass on third down and six, Lindquist would rush 22 yards for the score, cutting the lead to 29-22 after a missed PAT.

With 2:04 left on the clock, the Islanders got a needed onside kick to bounce their way, recovering on the Prep 49. The Islanders would drive to the five yardline, where on third and goal, Lindquist would plow into the endzone with only five seconds to play. This time the PAT was good and after the kickoff and Prep taking a knee, we were headed to overtime.

Prep would get the ball first and the two teams would play on the north side of the field.

The Panthers would need five plays, all running, to get into the endzone to get the lead back. Tere Calloway carried 4 times for 20 yards including the touchdown from 4 yards away. After the PAT, Prep had the lead 36-29.

Mercer Island would run two plays to get to the nine yardline making it first and goal. After a first down incompletion, Lindquist would rush four yards to make it third and goal from the five. The Islanders had a tough time getting into the correct formation and were called for a Delay Of Game. Third down and goal from the ten, senior Phil Frazier would rush 4 yards, bringing up 4th and goal from the six. Lindquist would move right and hit Eric Stefanchik for the score.

Senior, Alex Wood would line up for the kick, but Seattle Prep would call a timeout to "Ice" him. When he did finally get the kick off, it was tipped by the Prep rush and floated toward the crossbar. The ball would hit the crossbar and end up back in the endzone. No good, Prep wins.

Lindquist would finish the day with 128 yards on 24 carries and 4 touchdowns. He would also throw for 333 yards on 31/48, with 2 INT's and a touchdown. Tere Calloway would lead the Panthers in rushing with 138 yards rushing on 15 carries and two touchdowns.
